Editor’s Note: Ever forgotten Valentine’s Day? Or your friend’s birthday? Yeah, it doesn’t feel good. Hasty preparations say, “Hey. I know I *say* you’re important to me, but really, you’re not.” Easter has a way of just sneaking up on us. We don’t want it to just “sneak up” on us. So to prepare, we’re doing 40 days of devotionals. Each devotional is written by a Stage3 leader about Jesus – and what His life, his death on the Cross, and His resurrection mean for you and I. May these devotionals help you anticipate Easter 2012.
“Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and [Jesus] was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the
wind died down. They were completely amazed.”
In this passage, Jesus told his disciples to not be afraid because He was
there. Even the people that were the closest to Jesus got scared sometimes.
They didn’t understand what was happening when they saw someone coming
toward their boat. Of course they didn’t understand! They were in the middle
of a lake! There shouldn’t have been a person walking toward their boat.
Sometimes in our scariest moments, it is hard to step back and remember that
Jesus is always with us. It can be hard to remember that He will protect us
and never leave us alone.
There can be a lot of things that we think are scary in our lives. We can be
afraid of things like tests, bullies, college, the future. But if Jesus
is present in your life, there is nothing to be afraid of.
Take a look at your life. Is there anything that makes you afraid? Causes you anxiety? Something you dread? If so, just remember that what Jesus said to His disciples is the same thing He is saying to you:
“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
